Esri’s ArcGIS Utility Network (UN) is the next generation system for utility data management and is becoming the standard for utilities across many sectors to manage geospatial data through optimized web-based infrastructure. However, water utilities have been slow to adopt the UN for a variety of reasons. The data and information migration process are perceived as complex, expensive and an unnecessary endeavor - along with significant impacts to existing data models, system integrations, and workflows. In addition, the underlying structure and governance of data is a foundational element that must be defined and established early on prior to migration. In this workshop, we pull back the curtain on the keys to data governance and seek to demystify UN requirements during the migration processes. We will explore industry best practices and lessons learned based on recent experience to help you prepare for a near or distant future migration to Esri’s UN. Key items to be discussed include but not limited to: UN benefits, data governance, data readiness assessments, UN prototyping, data cleanup, interim alternatives, and migration best practices.
